BACKGROUND of CRISIS in HONDURAS After decades of military rule and turmoil, Honduras - once Spanish Honduras - approved a new constitution in 1982. For democratic purposes, that constitution provided that the countrys president could only serve one term. But in 2009, then President Manuel Zelaya, with the support of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, attempted to hold a referendum to increase presidential terms limits so that he could continue to rule under the doctrine of continuismo. On June 28, 2009, Zelaya was arrested in his home per order of the Honduran Supreme Court and deported from the country. A government was established under the interim government of Roberto Micheletti. Was this a coup - as the US State Department as alleged - or the preservation of Honduran democracy? PJTV sent filmmaker Chris Burgard to Honduras to find out.
