For College Students and Professors
Win $20,000
Enter PJTV’s Generational Theft Contest
Many Americans are concerned about how deficit-spending decisions being made today will impact the next generation about to enter the workforce. They have labeled their concerns "Generational Theft," and Pajamas TV has created several programs to report on what the real dollar impact could be on future generations.
One of those programs is our Generational Theft Contest.
Pajamas TV invites college students, collaborating with their professors, to calculate the financial impact of government programs on individuals. Both students and professors can earn money and recognition in the process. The winning entry will earn $10,000 for the participating college student or student team, and $10,000 for the professor.
To compete in this contest, students are asked to develop a method that can calculate the personal financial impact on a 2009 college graduate (with a bachelor’s degree) as a result of our national leaders implementing programs to mend and stimulate the U.S. economy. By 2014, 2019, 2024 and 2034, what can a 2009 college graduate with a bachelor’s degree forecast his/her income and purchasing power to be after factoring in the cost of current government programs to rebuild the economy?

To calculate a college-graduate’s financial prospects, contestants can include any variables they consider relevant. For example, they can evaluate the effect of TARP, TALF and economic-stimulus programs and their associated interest payments, health-care reform, inflation, taxes, and/or any other factors that they project will have an impact on an individual’s income and purchasing power. Students may be assisted, guided or advised by their selected professor.
If you are a college student interested in competing, you can deliver your submission in several formats:
- a written essay with supporting documents that describe how this calculation should be made.
- an interactive spreadsheet or interactive web-based calculator that allows its users to input various items to see how they affect a person’s future financial state.
- an essay and an interactive spreadsheet.
- an essay and an interactive web-based calculator.
Whatever form you select, you want to make sure that your approach clearly communicates the impact of government programs on an individual’s financial future.
Contest submissions will be reviewed by a panel of qualified judges.
