Andrew Klavan offers a guide for the perplexed on how to get close to God. ("Klavan on Culture") http://www.pjtv.com

1. the USSR, PRC, and many other communist regimes are designed to be quasi-religions. In fact, Stalin trained to be a clergyman in his youth, and used what he learned years later to master the cult of personality and groupthink strategies of his government. After all, gods are the most prolific employers of personality cults.

2. The statistic related to communist victims is false. I am not defending these regimes, but the Inquisition, Thirty Years War, the many Balkan Wars, the Troubles in Ireland, Holocaust (most Waffen-SS were practicing Christians), the Crusades, and countless other religious conflicts have together claimed an unknowable, but enormous, amount of lives.

3. Dropping birth rates has more to do with economic development and contraception than anything else. Wise couples wait for financial security before having kids, and are able to control their own reproduction. If this is bad, then Klavan and I have fundamentally different views of morality.

4. A little research will reveal that per capita contributions of secular European countries match, and often surpass U.S. figures. This doesn't mean Christians are less giving, it just means that generosity probably has more to do with the overall standard of living of a country (Scandinavia tends to rank the highest on both lists).

5. Atheism isn't mainstream in the media. The only demographic I know it to be dominant in is academia (correct me if I'm wrong, my data may be out of date). Of the "non-religious" demographic, most are deist, apathetic, or vaguely spiritual. Bold agnosticism is rare, atheism even rarer. Especially in America, very few are pressured into atheism.

6. I don't need to elaborate on how many non-believing authors and scientists there are. I probably don't need to mention any secular civil rights activists, but for the doubtful, the most famous two are John Stewart Mill and A. Philip Randolph. There are, of course, countless more.

7. You can't assume non-believers are less happy. I don't have numbers for this statistic, but I would believe that intellectual freedom and disbelief in eternal damnation would be a liberating, happy feeling. I suspect Klavan's religion has brought him joy, and he simply does not understand happiness without faith. To each his own - nobody can make a sweeping generalization on this subject.

8. Non-believers are not less charitable (see point 4).

If Klavan weren't so friendly I might be more annoyed with this video. I am just disappointed that PJTV once again has awkwardly married religious conviction with economic liberalism and fiscal conservatism. I enjoy PJTV's support of small government and there is some real talent here. Many my religious friends are Democrats and many of my atheist friends are classical liberals. PJTV's audience will not uniformly embrace this video's message.

That being said, I still find Klavan entertaining and will continually support PJTV.

Interesting challenge. From my blog:

"...some of the strongest and most brilliant people I know are non-believers and think Christians believe in some made up man in the sky that's impossible to prove exists. How can one say He can't be proven when they have never chosen to undertake the Substance (God's Word) they are to use to apply (test/practice) the Formula (Jesus) in their own Lab (Life)? I mean, how do scientists prove something? By only asking questions? By merely pondering theories? No."

this sucks

On USSR and China:
guess what the people stuffing jews in gas chambers believed in? protip: they had "Got with us" on their belt buckles

seriously though conservatives need to stop talking about religion. Who the hell cares if I dont believe in Jesus? belief is meant to be a personal thing. My atheism doesn't affect you.

what DOES matter is this: LIBERTY

as long as I believe in low taxes, small government and individual freedom, then my religious beliefs shouldn't matter, and its actually counter-productive for you to be so intolerant of atheism. I've seen many atheist friends who may have been open to the aforementioned principles, but were alienated by the relentless atheism bashing and scapegoating done by the religious right

if they don't believe in god, then sucks for them if they're wrong, but no biggie for you. However, they are left wing? THATS where the problem is.

I think a lot of people find christianity objectionable because they think that a God who could send people to everlasting suffering could not possibly be good. Especially since it does those in hell no good and those in heaven no good. Well since I agree with PJs emphasis on freedom of speech I've decided to refer those Christians who think that God gives up on people to the following. www.jesus-wept.net/dyingtolive.htm

And while we're at it, what kind of judge would accept the death of the innocent in place of the guilty? If a King did this there would be outrage throughout his kingdom. www.jesus-wept.net/guilty.htm

in case you haven't noticed, people talk about their FAITH and not their theory of divine supernatural intervention because that's exactly what it is.....FAITH.

and to quote ayn rand (don't label me as an objectivist): "laying your argument on faith is to admit that reason is on the side of ones enemies".

look i have many good religious friends: muslims, jews and christians....how come you talk about faith in god in general, yet pretty much only talk about christians? i'll tell you why- because as time goes by arguing for miracles and revelation for a specific religion came under ridicule...but if you talk vaguely to the point of white noise on "faith" and "experience of god" people won't push you away immediately.

i have no problem with believers who haven't learned the arguments against their position and who's belief in god, the bible and faith in general makes them happy....but as far as pundits and opinion shapers are concerned, i cannot forgive your fallacies.

jesus christ....
i LOVE pjtv but this video, even though IT IS HILARIOUS, but when i delve into the ideas behind this video it really pisses me off.

first of all- FOR THE LAST TIME, the problem with the soviet union wasn't they were ATHEISTS, it was that they were COMMUNISTS.

and a thing that always amazes me about free market espousing Christians is they always bring up communism's death toll to show how it's really atheism's death toll. it amazes me because free market people usually understand economics better partially because they better understand the UNSEEN consequences of intervention....yet they don't think about the lost living standard, the unfulfilled technological and scientific potential, the wealth not created, the unnecessary superstition, the mental torture, the shame, the MAN worship, the carnage, the non acceptance of modernity, the dogmatism, and the lies RELIGION has brought about.

I'm an atheist but I dont feel better than, frustrated, or offended by people of faith but i do see your point that a lot of atheists especially well known ones are often elitist jerks. I believe in everyones right to believe as they see fit in whatever they see fit be it god or beef jerky, I enjoy your videos very much including this one.

Actually the thing I'm most confused by is when atheists are actually offended when christians or religions in general attempt to give them advice on faith. Sure I don't believe in it but i think about it this way, someone else truly believes that my immortal soul might be in danger and takes the time out of their day to attempt to save it. I'm often flattered and humbled by the thought and intention behind the sentiment. Great video

Oops. Silly question. I'd been following the 60 days of 10 minutes of out loud prayer, but yesterday, I tried going without coffee or food... just water. Result: drowsiness in the morning, splitting headache in the evening. My prayer "by myself" time was interrupted by a yawn or a groan in pain. I couldn't get past "Dear God." Think it'll be okay if I double up with two prayer times today to make up for the one I missed?
