– [Voiceover] Greetings, I'm John Phillips and this is Up or Down. Coming up on today's show, it's Cosby and Quaaludes. They go together like Jello and whip cream. Also why President Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush are two peas in a pod. Plus, TV Land pulls the plug on reruns of "The Dukes of Hazzard" over the Confederate flag. All this and more will be judged with a thumbs up or a thumbs down by our panel. They are Navy veteran and Breitbart writer Kelli Serio. Very fair-minded civil rights defense attorney who you can hear on talk radio 790 KABC in LA from 10 to noon on Courtroom 790, Mr. Leo Terrell. And right next to him, stand-up comic and PJTV contributer, Steven Cruiser. As you can see, they have their thumbs ready to go. Very mischievous group today. So let's go ahead and get started. Our first topic involves Quaaludes and Cosby. Earlier this week, a judge released a 2005 deposition involving comedian Bill Cosby. In the deposition, America's dad said that he got Quaaludes so he could give them to women he wanted to have sex with. Cosby admitted to giving the sedative to at least one woman and to other people. Quote. How many? We don't know. Cosby said, "I meet, name redacted, in Las Vegas, she meets me backstage, I give her Quaaludes, we then have sex."

Boy meets girl, boy drugs girl, then the nasty happens. The Associated Press pressured the courts to release the deposition. The judge sided with the AP because of Cosby's status as a public figure. The judge said because Cosby talked about issues like unwed mothers and crime, he becomes a public moralist, which then opens him up to public scrutiny. The judge went on to say it's important for the public to see the contrast between Bill Cosby the public moralist and Bill Cosby the man whose alleged to have sexually mistreated women. So thumbs up or thumbs down on the judge's decision to release the Cosby deposition, Kelli? – [Kelli] I'm gonna go with a big thumbs up. I mean this man was on TV for many decades. People welcomed him into their house, they trusted him, and then find out he's just a big liar. As far as I'm concerned, he's actually a threat to public health. Or I'm sorry, public safety. – [John] Leo? – [Leo] Way up, way up. I was a defender of Bill Cosby. But here's the point: when he released that deposition testimony and it revealed that he basically used drugs to basically not only abuse women, possibly rape women? This man is outrageous, he's a monster. He's a serial monster. And every woman who went out there trying to take on Bill Cosby have now been vindicated. I am so happy about this because he is a image of hypocrisy.

– [John] Cruiser? – [Steven] Saddest thumbs up ever. I mean, this is just like, you know, I'm a comic, I've always been a comic. Cosby was one of the mainstays of my comedic upbringing and everything. And this is just like, you at first, you know, you didn't wanna believe it and it kept coming. The waves and waves and waves and now it looks, it's just. It's tragic, it looks like maybe we may be getting some more on this although Whoopi Goldberg is going down with the shipwreck. – [John] That's right. – [Leo] You know, it… – [Steven] She's throwin' down. – [Leo] It's not sad, it's a public vindication because this guy went out there and presented a image which was a lie. And now the public is aware. And it also serves as a deterrent for others. I'm glad, and again, I was a big supporter of his until he admitted his wrong doing. By the way, let's not forget, he's been married. – [John] What's the reaction in the comedy world? Because Jerry Seinfeld, among others, say that Bill Cosby was the influence that really shaped their act. Other comics say the same thing. But he's been very critical of comics, specifically of younger black comics. He was very critical of Eddy Murphy, he's been very critical of Chris Rock, because of the language and the subject matter of what's in their act. So, a lot of people looked at him and said, "Hey, what's the deal with you lecturing us when you're doing this behind closed doors?" – [Steven] I think that's part of what the outrage is here because as everybody's mentioned, he is a bit of a public moralist. He always has been. I mean, Eddy Murphy turned it into a good bit in his second live stand-up movie where he's talking about he had to go talk to Richard Pryor about the things that Cosby was saying about him. And Pryor said, "Well, tell Bill to have a Coke "and a smile and shut the F up." (laughter) But I think most of the comics I know right now, there were some who have said, okay we kinda heard rumors about this in the past. There were a lot of us that had never heard any rumors like this before. But it's, this is like, this is really shocking stuff still because this guy is just. He's been there since the sixties, you know? He's been up there for before most of even guys my age were even old enough to start doing stand-up. He's just been this constant within stand-up forever. And he was the one who wasn't the druggy train wreck or anything like that, you know? You had Carlin and Pryor competing for ways to kill themselves for 20 years, and Cosby never was that guy. So for him to be the one who ultimately was the most seriously tragic, awful, dangerous train wreck is very shocking. – [John] And his character on TV was always syrupy sweet. – [Steven] Yes. Oh yeah, he was the dad. He made a fortune as this, I'm the good dad, I'm talking about my family, I'm talking about, and he's got 10 women drugged in his hotel room. – [John] That's right. Doing unspeakable things to his Pudding Pop. (chuckling) Moving on to topic number two. The TV Land network has put the breaks on the General Lee.

The network has decided to pull reruns of the hit series "The Dukes of Hazzard". Why? Well, because of the Confederate flag which is painted on the roof of the General Lee. As you can see it right there, with Daisy Duke lying on top of it. That's the 1969 Dodge Charger, now being used as police cars, by the way. Driven by the Duke boys on the show. Warner Brothers will no longer license toys or model cars of the General Lee. John Schneider, who of course played Bo Duke on the show, wasn't happy about the decision. He said he wants the reruns to continue because the old-fashioned values the show promotes, including honesty, courage, chivalry, and rebelliousness. So up or down, do you think TV Land was right to pull the plug on "The Dukes of Hazzard"? – [Kelli] Thumbs down. I think it's just the PC crowd taking another jab at a piece of American history, slowly trying to cleanse it.

You know, it's just, I forget which actor it was, maybe…

– [John] Cooter? Ben Jones? – [Kelli] Ben Jones, he said you know, "How are we supposed to know where we're going "if we don't know where we came from?" So they're just slowly trying to erase pieces of American history, one piece at a time and people love this show. It's been on for 36 years. I don't think those are the, racism is what the show promotes. I just don't see that. – [John] And by the way, Ben Jones was a participant in the civil rights movement. He went down there and marched with Martin Luther King. He was a Congressman actually, representing the state of Georgia. And has a very long record in favor of civil rights. The former mayor of Atlanta, Mayor Jackson, is a close friend of his and he spends time talking to him about it. He's a very complex guy that's been turned into a villain by CNN, which is really unfortunate.

– [Leo] (honking) I agree. I heard that interview with Ben Jones on your radio show. And Ben Jones is a good man and CNN fail in trying to turn him into a villain. Look, this is private company overreacting to a horrible situation involving the murder of nine African-Americans. You know, I vote that this thing should be between the government bringing the flag down. But "Duke of Hazzard", I enjoy the show, it's perfectly okay, and I think it's wrong for TV Land to pull this show. Way, way down on this. Bad decision. – [John] Cruiser?

– [Steven] So dumb, it hurts. Really, so dumb it hurts. Trying to even tie it into what happened is just absolutely ridiculous. This is just, they're trying to get out ahead, they're trying to you know, get some points for themselves. That's what TV Land was trying to do. Score some points for themselves. They're trying to hop onto a tragedy and score a few publicity points and it's just the most ridiculous. What're they gonna ban Daisy Duke shorts now for women? – [John] Well, how about banning "I Love Lucy"? Because when Ricky would lose his temper, sometimes he'd put her over his knee and spank her? How about "The Honeymooners"? "To the moon, Alice," whenever Jackie Gleason got upset with her. Are those shows gonna be banned now too? – [Steven] I don't like the way they treated Isaac on "The Love Boat". (laughing) – [Leo] Hey listen, I'm thinking of something because you know, not only they're banning TV Land, I mean, "Duke of Hazzard", some of these stores are banning the Confederate flag. Why don't we get together and start selling Confederate flags? We can make a lot of money. – [John] There we go. – [Kelli] On Amazon and eBay you can still buy Nazi merchandise… – [Leo] Good point. – [Kelli] Communist, so it's, what's next? I seriously, I'm just waiting for an attack on the American flag to come. – [John] Which bakery was it that wouldn't do the Confederate flag but would do the ISIS flag? – [Leo] It was Walmart. – [Kelli] Walmart. It was Walmart. (laughing) – [Steven] Yeah, he didn't know it was the ISIS flag, this is just… – [Kelli] Yeah, okay. – [Steven] Oh god… – [John] Well this brings us to today's Facebook and Twitter question. We asked our viewers if they thought TV Land was right to pull the plug on reruns of "The Dukes of Hazzard". Here's what you had to say. Rick Meina said, "The show was never about that flag. "Dumb decision to remove the show." Linda Steiber-Brown says, "They are free "to turn off the Dukes, just like "I'm free to turn off TV Land station. "Fair is fair." Roger Goodwin said, "No, they were "wrong for pulling it off the air. "It's not a racist show. "36 years it's been on and never any "controversy and now it's an issue." Corbin Ollard tweeted, "It never "should have originally aired with "the Confederate flag on a car named General Lee. "Both are symbols of slavery." Thanks to all of you for sending in your replies. Now onto our final topic, topic number three. It appears that President Obama and presidential hopeful, Jeb Bush, are two peas in a pod when it comes to their dietary preferences. Both spoke out on Twitter about the recent New York Times article on guacamole. The article suggested adding English peas to the recipe. It seems neither one are appeased by the addition. They take their guacamole pea-less. Times said the peas and color add a unique texture to the Mexican staple. President Obama tweeted that he respects the New York Times, but not buying peas and guac. Onions, garlic, hot peppers, classic. Republican presidential hopeful, Jeb Bush, got straight to the point saying, "You don't put peas in guacamole." Hopefully these two can find a way to give peas a chance, by the way, (laughing) peas are not used in making guacamole. Avocados, tomato, onions, garlic, cilantro, maybe a little lime every once in a while. They're all a part of guacamole. So thumbs up, do you put your peas in your guacamole? – [Kelli] I'm just gonna say thumbs up because I don't personally, but would I try it? Yes, I'm open to it because I'm a foodie. But, you know, I'd try anything once, I guess. – [Leo] Thumbs down, I go to our favorite Mexican restaurant, I don't like peas in guacamole. I like it just the way it is. Thumbs down, way down. – [John] Yes.

– [Steven] As a native of the southwestern United States, I don't believe that anybody east of New Mexico should even be able to talk about Mexican food. Or try to tell me that they're making or serving Mexican food, which annoys my friends in Texas too, but that's, I'm a hardcore on that. When somebody from New York is like, "This is the way you should some Mexican thing." No you don't, just hush. That's like me talking about labor pains or something. They don't know what they're talking about and they never will. – [John] You know what? I refuse to go to any restaurant that's owned by a celebrity chef. Because they do too much to the food. I like a steak that tastes like a steak. I like guacamole that tastes like guacamole. My shrimp doesn't need coconuts, my steak doesn't need raspberry puree, and my guacamole doesn't need peas. I like it just the way it is. – [Kelli] Guacamole's good if you just take the avocado, mash it up, put a little salt in… – [Leo] And John is absolutely right, I've been to dinner with him, he goes straight with the basics. – [John] Absolutely. Meat and potatoes, guacamole, no peas.

We asked our fans on Facebook and Twitter if they liked peas in their guacamole and here's the results of our poll. 19% said yes, communists. I think it adds a bit more flavor and texture. 50% said no. (cheering) Peas do not belong in guacamole ever. And 31% of you said maybe, I would first need to taste test.
